Pruning Services in Baton Rouge

Pruning at the wrong time costs you a year of blooms. Azaleas cut in the fall will not flower in spring. Crape myrtles topped in winter grow back as knuckles and weak shoots. We prune shrubs, hedges and small trees on the plant's calendar, not ours, as part of year-round plans and renovation cleanups across Baton Rouge and Livingston Parish.

Types of Pruning We Do

  • Hedge shaping: boxwood, holly, ligustrum and viburnum kept square or rounded on a schedule so they hold their shape.
  • Shrub pruning: azaleas after bloom, roses in late winter, camellias after they finish, hydrangeas by type.
  • Small ornamental trees: crape myrtle, Japanese maple, magnolia and citrus, thinned rather than topped.
  • Palms and sago: dead fronds and seed pods removed, never the green crown.
  • Rejuvenation pruning on overgrown beds during a cleanup or renovation.

Pruning for Different Plant Types

Spring bloomers are pruned right after they flower. Summer bloomers are pruned in late winter before growth starts. Evergreens are shaped lightly through the season. Getting that calendar right is the whole job, and it is why the same crew on a plan does better work than a one-time visit: they know what was cut last time and what is about to bloom.

How Often Should You Prune

Formal hedges want a light shaping every few weeks in the growing season to stay crisp. Most flowering shrubs want one real pruning a year at the right time, plus deadheading. Small trees want attention every year or two. On a plan this is scheduled for you.

Why Regular Pruning Matters

A shrub that outgrows its spot shades out everything behind it, blocks the window and rubs the siding. Pruned on a schedule it stays the size it was planted to be, blooms harder and lets air through the bed, which is most of the disease prevention a Louisiana garden gets without chemicals.
