Landscaping Baton Rouge: Design, Renovation and Installation

A landscape renovation is where everything comes together: the old beds come out, a new design goes in, and the drainage, irrigation, rock, edging and lighting happen as one project by one crew. We recommend what the yard needs, not what carries the biggest markup.

One set of hands

The plan and the build come from the same person

Gerardo draws the design himself in Morpholio Trace. On larger renovations the design is included. Then his crew builds it, so nothing is lost between the drawing and the yard.

Landscaping in Baton Rouge That Starts With the Water

A landscape that floods is not finished. Before we talk about plants, we look at where your yard holds water after rain, because beds and sod built on a yard that does not drain look good for one season and fail in the first wet spring. Grade and drainage come first, then irrigation, then everything you actually see.

Hernandez Lawnscape has designed, built and renovated landscapes in Baton Rouge and Livingston Parish since 2013. Owner Gerardo Hernandez walks every assessment, draws the design himself on larger projects, and his crew builds it. There are no hand-offs between the plan and the finished yard.

Residential Landscaping in Baton Rouge

Most of our residential work falls into two kinds of calls. The first is a yard that has a problem: standing water, dead patches, beds that have gone to weeds. The second is a homeowner who is tired of the whole thing and wants it done once, properly: new design, drainage and irrigation underneath, sod, beds, rock, edging and lighting on top.

Both start the same way, with a walk through the yard and an itemized quote so you can see what each part costs. Plants are line items, not a lump sum. We recommend what the yard needs, and when the honest answer is that you do not need something, we say so.

What a Landscape Renovation Includes

  • Demo and haul-off of the old beds, sod and edging.
  • Grading so the yard falls away from the slab, and drainage where grade alone cannot finish the job.
  • Irrigation zoned to the new plan, with beds on drip and lawn on spray.
  • Sod chosen for the lot: St. Augustine, Zoysia, Centipede or Bermuda.
  • Beds planted for the sun and soil they sit in, mulched and edged.
  • Decorative rock, steel or stone edging, and low-voltage lighting as the finish.

On larger renovations the design is included. Gerardo draws it himself in Morpholio Trace, so the plan and the build come from the same set of hands.

What Our Landscaping Customers Get

The clean edge along the driveway, the weeds pulled out of the concrete cracks, the small debris picked up before the truck leaves. Those details are how the company grew from one Denham Springs crew in 2013, and they are still how new customers find us. One early customer noticed the work at a neighbor's house and asked Gerardo over. More than a decade later the same crew maintains that yard, the customer's grandmother's and their parents' too.

Honest Scope, Not Plant Markup

Big landscaping companies lean on heavily marked-up plants. We would rather put the money in the ground where it lasts: the grade, the drainage, the irrigation. Plants are priced as line items so you can compare, and we will tell you which ones will struggle in your yard before you pay for them. Drainage, irrigation and artificial turf are warrantied. Living plants cannot honestly be guaranteed, and we say so upfront.

Questions

Landscaping questions, answered straight

The questions homeowners ask on the assessment, with the answers Gerardo gives.

How long does a landscape renovation take?
Most renovations run one to three weeks on site once the design is approved: demo and grading first, then drainage and irrigation, then sod, beds, rock and edging. Work usually starts within two weeks of accepting the quote, except during the spring rush.
Do you replace plants that die?
Living plants depend on weather and watering after we leave, so we do not pretend to guarantee them. We plant what fits the site, tell you how to water it, and warranty the drainage, irrigation and turf underneath.
Is Hernandez Lawnscape one of the landscaping companies in Baton Rouge that does the drainage too?
Yes, and it is the reason to call us first. Most landscaping companies in Baton Rouge subcontract or skip drainage. We grade and drain the yard before anything decorative goes in, so the beds and sod still look right in year two.
Do you charge for landscape design?
On larger renovations, no. Gerardo draws the design himself in Morpholio Trace and includes it with the project. If you already have an architect's plan, we will build from it.
Why is drainage part of a landscaping project?
Because a landscape that floods is not finished. Root rot from standing water kills new plants faster than heat does. Grade, drainage and irrigation come before anything decorative.
Do you warranty plants?
We warranty the irrigation, drainage and turf we install. Living plants depend on watering after we leave, so we cannot honestly guarantee them, and we would rather say that upfront than argue about it later.
How can landscaping improve my property's value?
A well-landscaped property boosts curb appeal and elevates the experience of visiting your property for potential buyers, potentially increasing property value by 5-15%.
How can good landscaping keep my house cooler in the summer?
Strategically placed trees and shrubs can provide shade, reducing cooling costs in summer.
How often should I redo or refresh my landscape?
While landscapes can last for years, consider refreshing plant beds, mulch, and certain elements every 2-5 years for optimal appeal.
Do you offer sustainable or native landscaping options?
Yes, we can design landscapes using native plants that require less water and maintenance, benefiting local ecosystems as well as migrating birds.
Can you make a landscaping plan to work with my existing landscape features?
Absolutely, we can incorporate existing elements into a new design or make recommendations for improvements.
